The house with turrets
‘Turret’ seems like a bit of an exaggeration, but that’s how they’re referred to and how I think of this little pair that perch on my roof. Originally ventilation turrets, they’d taken a lots of weathering over the years and one of the finials seemed to have fallen off the roof and disappeared into the ether, never to be found again.
For jobs like these I’m forever grateful to have clever friends whose amazing workmanship makes magic happen! Knowli took on the job of refurbishing the turrets, retaining as much of what was there and replacing where essential. Bird netting installed, coats of anthracite paint applied to match the external woodwork, and the turrets looked like new. The one remaining lichen-coated finial was given to Chippy, our Edinburgh based woodworker and sculptor friend, and a new pair of finials were perfectly replicated on the lathe.
A restoration completed with skill and love, and a key feature of the building retained for years to come.
